Soon after the death of the popular poet Ghulam Ahmad Mahjoor (1885-1952), Kamil began his literary career in Kashmiri, leaving behind his decade-long flirtation with Urdu poetry. Within no time, Kamil was shaping and enriching the changing literary scene along with his contemporaries such as Dina Nath Nadim (1916-1988) and Rehman Rahi (b. 1923). Kamil's versatility and virtuosity he exhibited in various literary forms, coupled with his characteristically native voice, has made him an outstanding literary figure in Kashmir.
